Justification for our participation in the TRINO project

The region of Segovia Sur is located in the southwestern area of the province of Segovia. It is formed by 51 municipalities, 109 population centers, with most of them being in the northern basin of the Sierra de Guadarama Mountains, which gives the region a predominantly mountainous landscape. It has a total area of 1,594 km², 23% of the territory of the province, and most of which is dominated by the Sierra de Guadarrama; in fact, 92% is considered mountainous terrain and is home to around 35,000 inhabitants. More than 60% of the territory is included in the Natura 2000 ecology network; more specifically, 5 Sites of Community Interest (LICs, from the Spanish acronym) have been proposed and 3 Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPAs, also from the Spanish acronym) have been declared. The fauna found in the three ZEPAs is similar, since in reality they are three different areas in the Sierra del Guadarrama (Sierra del Guadarrama, Campo Azálvaro, Pinares de Peguerinos, and the Valle del Voltoya and Valle del Zorita). Our territory lies inside the recovery area for the black stork and the Spanish imperial eagle, species listed as being endangered. Because of all of this and the quality of the opportunities available to tourists that we have in our region, we consider the need to participate in the TRINO cooperation project justified.
