ROUTE DESCRIPTIONAtapuerca, apart from being known worldwide for its important archaeological site, is also home to an important lagoon system. Livestock and agricultural use throughout history caused the progressive silting up of the lagoons. The decision was taken to rehabilitate them in 2004, different works took place which were concluded in 2008. These five lagoons are situated in the Corridor of la Bureba, which is the most important passage route for migratory birds on the Iberian Peninsula. The route goes round the five lagoons, starting at the Fuente Cubillo, and its washing place. Depending on the time of year, different species of birds may be observed. For example, in the spring and summer months, there are nesting birds such as the Barn Swallow, Montagu’s Harrier, and the Black-winged Stilt; in winter, the Northern Lapwing and, above all, numerous species of Anatidae. In spring and autumn there are migratory birds such as the Avocet, Reed Warblers, and Greylag Goose. Mallards, Moorhens, Little Grebe, and Western Marsh Harriers are present all year round.
