ROUTE DESCRIPTIONLocated in the middle of the moorland on Montes Torozos, and perched above the small valley of River Hornija, is the village of Peñaflor de Hornija. This route starts to the east of the village, it is a route that follows the moor’s horizontality and which displays the typical habitat of dry cereal lands with some dispersed seasonal pools. In springtime Skylarks, Crested Larks and Calandra Larks cheer the visitors with their trills. Little Owls and Northern Wheatears perch on the majanos (piles of stones cleared from fields) while, in the cereal fields, the timid Quail sings, with its unmistakable call. In years with abundant rains migratory species of Charadriiformes and Anatidae (Waders, Tringas, Crab-plovers, Ducks, etc.) rest in the navas (meadows), and Black-headed Gulls and Stilts, amongst other birds, can breed here if there is enough water in spring. Although they are not abundant in the area, if you are lucky you will be able to see Bustards, the heaviest flying birds in the world.
