ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThe Ebro reservoir is one of the largest artificial stretches of water in Spain, and it is also one of the most important habitats for aquatic birds at a national and international level. In the year 2000 it was declared a Special Protection Area for Birds. The route begins in Arija, on the banks of the reservoir, and gives us the opportunity to observe the birdlife that inhabits the most representative eco-systems found in this area; these being aquatic, peatlands, pastures, low shrubland, and well-developed woodland. As a result, in different periods of the year it is possible to observe birds such as Mallards, Little Bitterns, Honey Buzzards and Short-toed Eagles. The most noticeable species that can be observed in summer in the pastures is the White Stork, in Autumn the Eurasian Spoonbill passes through, and in winter the reservoir is home to a variety of ducks and waders. Due to the length of the route, it is best done either by bicycle or in different stages on foot.
