ROUTE DESCRIPTIONThe countryside around Algondrón is some of the most distinctive of the Sierra del Solorio, situated within the Site of Community Importance (SCI) of Sabinares del Jalón. In this area the high plains are interrupted by undulations and river beds. The route runs through the head of the winding Arroyo del Otero gorge. Starting from Iruecha it descends through the Majada del Descansadero until it reaches the main bed of the stream. Its meandering course heads north along an open canyon. A wide track climbs a steep slope to cultivated fields, which appear firstly dotted around in the woods, and then in the open as we near Iruecha. Along the route the main vegetation is scrubland with juniper bushes, along with the occasional stand of Holm Oaks. In springtime it is frequented by species of birds such as the Woodlark, Mistle Thrush and Western Bonelli’s Warbler. Winter sees the arrival of other species of the thrush family like the Redwing and the Fieldfare, which feed on the supply of berries. When passing certain rocky areas, one may see Griffon Vultures, Ravens, Rock Sparrows, Golden Eagles, and in springtime Egyptian Vultures.
