DESCRIPTION OF ROUTEThe route starts in the village of Ubierna and passes through San Martín de Ubierna, both situated on the southern slopes of the Cantabrian Range and belonging to the municipality of Merindad de Río Ubierna, in Burgos. Due to the strategic position of Ubierna for communication with the north and the existence of the fertile river plain of the River Ubierna, it has been settled since Paleolithic times. The route passes through various types of countryside. At first it goes through the Dehesa of the Sierra del Monteacedo, and the necropolis of Los Pilones, where there are a large number of birds of prey and steppeland birds. The second part goes into the interesting gorge of the Rucios, a stream which is a tributary of the Ubierna, notable for the presence of birds of prey such as the Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Golden Eagle, and Eurasian Eagle Owl. Also observable are other smaller birds such as the Chough and the Eurasian Crag Martin, amongst other rock-inhabiting species.
