DescriptionThis route leaves northbound from the Palencian town of Villamediana, negotiating hillsides of gypsum vegetation until it arrives at the plateau. Valuable areas of grassland and thyme bushes can be found, in which birds such as the spectacled warbler or black-eared wheatear can be seen in their ideal habitat. In summer, chromatic European bee-eaters delight visitors with their acrobatic flights in search of insects. If you continue the tour, you will cross Mediterranean woodland areas made up of almost equal parts holm and gall oaks. In some enclaves the forest becomes notably dense. This is the home of birds such as the ortolan bunting, Eurasian golden oriole and the diminutive Bonelli’s warbler. In spring, these species can be easily detected by their characteristic song. Nor is it hard to find birds of prey such as the booted eagle and common buzzard. The route crosses fields of cereal, bringing an end to an extraordinarily diverse setting. In this landscape, the black-shouldered kite and Montagu’s harrier plough through the sky in search of mice. Here you can catch sight of birds that inhabit this environment, such as the corn bunting, Eurasian skylark, chalk-browed mockingbird, Eurasian thick-knee and finch.
