MONTAÑAS DEL TELENO

Montañas del Teleno is a non-profit association in favor of rural development that was created in May 1994 by 16 city governments in the Sierra del Teleno area. Today, the Asscoation is formed by 25 city governments and more than 50 members, including cooperatives, cultural associations, consumer associations, Tourism Initiative Centres, and A.P.A.S.

The Montañas del Teleno territory is located in the southwestern part of the León Province and includes several traditional regions that are proud of their age-old history: the “secret” Cabrera, the “mythical” Maragatería, the “serene” Valdería and the “fertile” lands of the River Duerna; these are in addition to the towns of the “red” banks of the River Jamuz and those of the “generous” Tuerto-Turienzo watershed, where life occurs in a geographical setting characterised by mountains of medium height and an intermediate zone between this area and the Plateau.

To the north, the Montes Aquilanos mark the natural boundary with El Bierzo; to the south, the Sierra de la Cabrera marks the division with Sanabria, a region of the Zamora Province; to the east it is bordered by Ribera del Órbigo and El Páramo, while to the west it is the Orensana de Valdeorras region that defines the geographical limits.
