ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The Lakes of Gayangos are situated between the hamlets of Gayangos and Bárcena de Pienza, both of which are municipal districts that are part of Merindad de Montija, in the rural district of Merindades. This complex of lakes originated due to a localised and very deep subsidence of the land, this has meant that their waters are deep and show little variation throughout the different seasons.

The route starts in Gayangos and follows tracks which approach some of the lakes, and which can also give an overall panorama of the complex from higher ground, as is the case with the observatory that has been erected near the C-629 local road. This observatory gives a view of the whole lake complex.

The lush marshland vegetation provides shelter for various species of birds. One can observe Eurasian Coots, Water Rails, Common Moorhens, Little Grebes and Mallards. In summer it is possible to observe Black Kites, Great Reed Warblers and Whinchats, while in winter there are numerous Great Cormorants, Eurasian Teals and Goldeneyes, amongst other species.
