ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Los Oteros, to the east of León, offers a wide variety of countryside, one of the most impressive being the woods of Pyrenean Oak which grow in the mountains that the River Cea flows through.

At the start of this route, from the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Yecla (2 km north-east of Villaverde de Arcayos) there is an immediate panorama of the river plain and the winding River Cea. On the first part of the route Oaks are becoming established among the reforested Pine woods, creating a thick, almost impenetrable forest. The route then passes along the edge of this forest beside cultivated fields, before entering the Pyrenean Oak woods, which contain some very old specimens. Halfway along the route the Laguna de Cabrihuela, with it own oak wood, is one of the main attractions of the route.

In relation to the birdlife, of particular note is the presence of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker, a species which is attracted to mature Oak woods. Also present in this environment are Warblers, Goldcrests, Thrushes, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, European Honey Buzzards, and Owls.
