ROUTE DESCRIPTION

This linear route connects two small villages in the province of Burgos, Ura and Castroceniza, the former is a municipal district of Covarrubias, while the latter pertains to Quintanilla del Coco. The two villages are not connected by road, but by a pleasant track which runs along the valley of the River Mataviejas, -a tributary of the River Arlanza, in an area that has been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds, and a Site of Community Interest by the name of “Sabinares de la Arlanza”.

The most important feature of this route is its large limestone canyon, a narrow, winding rocky gorge carved out by the River Mataviejas, an easy track suitable for all the family allows us to enjoy the curious geomorphological features, as well as its vegetation, mainly of Savin Junipers and Holm Oaks, and its fauna: amongst the bird species that can be observed are Egyptian Vultures and Griffon Vultures, which nest on the inaccessible ledges of the rocky walls. At times along the route it is possible to get closer to the riverbank, where one can hear the song of numerous birds, like Nightingales, Typical Warblers, Tree Warblers and Golden Orioles.
