Province of Palencia, District of Cerrato Palentino

Type of route: Circular

Distance: 6.2 miles

Degree of difficulty: Low

Duration on foot: 3 hours

Duration by bicycle: 50 minutes

Recommended time of year: All year round

Description

The route starts in the town of Cevico Navero and passes through the landscape of Monte Girón, an extensive Mediterranean woodland area comprising predominantly holm and gall oaks. This is a reduced representation of the forest that in years gone by stretched over the entire District of Cerrato.

A pleasant walk along this route will bring you into contact with the most representative birds of the Mediterranean forest, as well as others belonging to the rain-fed crops surrounding it, giving you the chance to watch the thekla lark, woodlark, jay and azure-winged magpie.

If you are lucky, you can watch the flights of birds of prey, such as the black-shouldered kite, booted eagle and short-toed snake-eagle (the latter two can only be seen in summer).

You can also discover other smaller birds, such as the black-eared wheatear and nervous warblers, which must be looked for amongst the bushes. From April to September you can watch the spectacled warbler, the subapline warbler and the orphean warbler.

On a spring evening you can watch the vertiginous flight of the nightjar.
