ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The village of Soto de la Vega, in León, is located in the south of the province, in the fertile lowlands of the River Órbigo. It belongs to the natural and historic region of Tierra de la Bañeza.

The ornithological route starts in the village square, next to a church from the fourteenth century which was declared a National Monument in 1943. After a short urban stretch going north, the route turns to the east to pass into the fertile cultivated lowlands, which are irrigated by the Órbigo thanks to an extensive network of Acequias (irrigation channels). Some typical birds of this habitat are the Black Kite, the Meadow Pipit, the Yellow Wagtail, the Magpie, the Starling or the singular Rook.

The itinerary comes close to the Órbigo riverbank, where it coincides with a signposted track with the theme of fishing resources in the River Órbigo. Amongst Poplar plantations we can find other plant species such as Ashes, Rowans and Willows, and enjoy the melodious songs of riverbank birds in springtime (Typical Warblers, Chaffinches, Chiffchaffs and Great Tits).
