ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The route runs through the fertile plains of the River Tormes as it flows between the villages of Juzbado and Almenara de Tormes. In this stretch the river is catalogued as a Site of Community Importance (SCI).

The route starts in Juzbado, its elevated location gives views of the banks of the Tormes from a privileged position. The first part of the route is an agreeable walk amongst poplar trees and the riverside vegetation which gives shelter to many small birds such as the Cirl Bunting, the Eurasian Reed Warbler or the Nightingale. Grey Herons can be seen flying over the river, or perched on its banks, a bird that can form colonies in this river. With rather more luck it is also possible to see otters.

The path moves slightly away from the banks to proceed towards an area where maize and cereals are cultivated, interspersed with Holm Oaks, forming a dehesa much used by cattle. The route finishes at the Centro de Iniciativas Ambientales of the Fundación Tormes-EB. It is worthwhile approaching it through an interpretative route in order to enjoy the exuberant vegetation of the riverside.
