ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Villaescusa de las Torres, a locality in the municipality of Pomar de Valdivia, is located in an area of singular beauty with a variety of landscapes. Next to the River Pisuerga, it climbs up the hillside of the Las Tuerces plateau, on a rocky limestone outcrop with fanciful shapes, perhaps the most representative amongst the Karstic landscapes in the mountains of Palencia, now declared a Natural Monument and Site of Community Importance (SCI).

The first part of the route goes through the lush riverbank vegetation along the banks of the River Pisuerga on a fisherman’s track, one’s progress could be slowed by the high grass that grows in springtime. A rich variety of birds such as Chiffchaffs, Great Tits, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Long-tailed Tits, Eurasian Treecreepers, Common Firecrests and Eurasian Wrens, amongst others, find a perfect environment here. On the second part of the route the perspective changes completely, climbing up to the top of the hill situated on the west of Villaescusa: there is a spectacular panoramic view of the river, Las Tuerces and the Cañón de la Horada. From here it is possible to see birds such as the Eurasian Crag Martin, the Alpine Swift, the Red-billed Chough, the Short-toed Eagle, the Egyptian Vulture or the Griffon Vulture.
