ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Near the Prado Vega industrial estate and Cuellar Golf Course one finds this singular feature, the El Espadañal Lake. It lies next to the Pradillo stream, and covers an area of 50 Hectares at present. It maintains its level due to a series of small dikes which retain the water, although in summer it suffers a period of low water levels.

The route begins in Dehesa Mayor, a municipal district of Cuéllar, at the 73.7km mark on the local C-112 road. It starts along a dirt track between cultivated fields, which later turns into a sandy track as it enters a wood of Maritime Pines. Shortly after, the lake appears to the right of the path, we follow round its bank until we come to a little-used track which goes through a grove of Poplars parallel to the Pradillo stream. Mallards are the most common species on the lake, one can also observe other aquatic species like Coots, Little Grebes, Herons, Egrets, Black-winged Stilts, Northern Lapwings, Common Sandpipers. The typical pine wood species include the Great Spotted Woodpecker, Mistle Thrush, Crested Tit, Coal Tit, Short-toed Treecreeper, Eurasian Nuthatch, and Azure-winged Magpie, amongst others.
