ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The route begins in the centre of the urban area of Casillas, situated in the lee of the Sierra de Gredos, at 1.000 m above sea-level, in the far west of the rural district of the Valle del Tiétar. The territory of this municipality has been declared the ‘Valle del Tiétar’ Special Protection Area for Birds (SPAB), and a Site of Community Interest (SCI).

Following the road that leads to Sotillo, by a sharp curve, a path starts to climb beside a stream in a leafy Chestnut wood, with centuries old examples. One can observe forest birds like Chaffinches, Jays, the Great-spotted Woodpecker, Robins, and Treecreepers.

After passing through some housing developments we return to the Chestnut wood in the west of the municipal area within the rock walls of the Pajarero Gorge. In this area of woodlands, looking up one can observe gliding raptors such as the Goshawk, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and Booted Eagle. Climbing a slope the route returns to Casillas.
