ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Candeleda is situated in the far west of the rural district of ‘Valle del Tiétar’, it contains an incredible variety of landscapes, from the high peaks of the Sierra de Gredos to the north, to the depression of the River Tiétar valley to the south. The River Tiétar has here been dammed to form the Rosarito reservoir, and its right bank has been declared the ‘Valle del Tiétar’ Special Protection Area for Birds (SPAB), and a Site of Community Interest (SCI).

From the road to Madrigal de la Vera, in the western part of the urban area of Candeleda, we follow Calle del Lomo heading south through the village. The asphalted street changes into a farm track and passes through an area of Oaks, Understorey and meadows where Azure-winged Magpies are very common. Continuing south, we reach the banks of the Rosarito reservoir, from where there are magnificent views of the Sierra de Gredos, and Common Cranes, Red Kites, and numerous species of aquatic birds may be observed.
