ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The route starts next to the Canal de Castilla, considered one of the great civil engineering works in the country. After all navigation ceased in the canal, its fluvial ecosystem slowly regenerated to develop the floral and fauna splendour presently visible.

The first part of the route, coinciding with the Camino de Santiago, runs on a path parallel to the course of the Canal. Amongst reeds and riverbank vegetation we can hear and see typical birds of this environment such as Reed Warblers, Nightingales, Bearded Reedlings or Grass-warblers. In the pools related to the Canal there is a significant presence of Ardeidae such as the Little Bittern, the Great Bittern or the Purple Heron, and of birds of prey such as the Marsh Harrier.

In the second part of the route we leave the Canal to cross the agricultural environment of cereal pseudo-steppe. Notable birds are the Great Bustards, Little Bustards, Stone-curlews or Montagu’s Harriers, which accompany the visitor along this last stretch of the itinerary.
