ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The far north of the province of Ávila and the rural district of La Moraña are characterised by extensive flat cultivated areas, where one finds numerous steppe-land lakes, small wetlands and ponds which provide a habitat for birds. This route is situated in the Site of Community Importance and Special Protection Area for Birds of Tierra de Campiñas.

The route follows comfortable tracks throughout, it starts in Madrigal de las Altas Torres, whose walls enclose a wealth of history. Shortly after starting, heading south-west, we come to the remains of the Convent of Extramuros, where there is a large colony of Lesser Kestrels. The route then continues in the same direction across the wide cereal plains, where one can observe different birds of the steppes: the Black-bellied Sand Grouse, Great Bustard and Little Bustard; as well as birds of prey like Kites, and Harriers.

The route approaches the thread-like copse that follows the course of the River Trabancos, -worth a look to observe riverside birds, before reaching the small village of Rasueros, where it finishes.
