ROUTE DESCRIPTION

To the east of the city of Palencia lies the municipality of Villaviudas, in the heart of the rural district of El Cerrato. This route displays an important feature of the area; its Limestone moorlands.

The route starts and finishes in the cereal fields. This landscape favours the observation of species of birds related to the semi-steppelands of cereal cultivation, with their camouflaged plumage; like the Eurasian Stone Curlew, Calandra Lark and the Crested Lark.

Having climbed up to the moorland, known as La Torrecilla, one soon notices the change in the countryside, with its carpet of Thyme, and its woods of Holm and Portuguese Oaks. Here one can observe around the bushes Dartford Warblers and Spectacled Warblers. The Ortolan Bunting, Wood Lark, Thekla Lark and Black-eared Wheatear are also typical residents of these open areas. High above them all one can observe raptors like the Short-toed Eagle and Booted Eagle.

Of note for their traditional constructions are the corrals of La Torrecilla and the spring of Fuentecirio.
