ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The area where this route is located is an example of the extensive cultivated plains of the south-east of Leon, dotted with steppe-land lakes, small wetlands, pools and waterlogged areas. It forms part of the Oteros-Campos Site of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Area for Birds (SPAB).

From Valverde-Enrique the route leads firstly to la Laguna de Linos and la Laguna Grande, the largest lakes in this area. From there it continues southwards passing through the area around the Laguna de los Juncos, to the Laguna Amor, from where it starts the return towards Valverde on a different track heading northwards, passing the Laguna de Valdecastillo and other small lakes.

This open environment of unirrigated fields is suitable for the observation of steppe-land birdlife, such as the Bustard, the Little Bustard, Northern Harriers, Montagu’s Harriers and Lesser Kestrels amongst other species. In addition the small seasonal lakes which we pass along the route provide a habitat for numerous birds attracted by water, here they find a suitable environment both for breeding and on their migrations. This is the case of the Marsh Harrier, the Black-winged Stilt, and many waders..
