ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The route begins in Abelón, a municipal district of Moral de Sayago, a municipality which stands on top of the cliffs on the left bank of the River Duero gorge, in the province of Zamora. The area has been declared the ‘Gorges of the Duero’ Site of Community Interest, and a Special Protection Area for Birds.

The route starts from the square by the church in Abelón, and it runs through countryside of Holm Oak dehesas. Along the route birds such as Hoopoes, Chats, Wheatears and Wagtails can be observed. Common Buzzards, Booted Eagles, and Kites patrol the sky in search of prey, while the squat Little Owl poses on some ruin or old tree trunk.

The descent to the Pozo de Cubo mill is surprising, beside this construction is the waterfall of the same name. It is spectacular countryside, set in the gorge of the River Duero, and one can enjoy the flight of the Black Stork, the Egyptian Vulture, the Griffon Vulture and the Golden Eagle.
