ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The Peña Ulaña is an elongated meseta which rises 230 m above the surrounding land. It is one of the most emblematic in this rural district, and is catalogued as part of the Geological Reserve of Las Loras, along with the Peña Amaya, on the most southerly slopes of the Cordillera Cantábrica. It is also a Site of Community Interest and a Special Protection Area for Birds.

This circular route starts from the ruins of the mill of Bernabé, from where it starts to climb up to the top of Peña Ulaña, at first through an enclosed valley between two limestone walls, and then along a path which climbs the rocky outcrop. Whilst climbing the zig-zags on the ascent it is easy to observe Griffon Vultures which nest on the ledges, Alpine Swifts, Crag Martins, and Rock Sparrows also find nesting sites in the crevices of the steep rock wall. From here the route passes below the isolated pinnacle of El Castillo, and then returns to the mill where, along the banks of the Ordejones stream, one can see and hear birds such as Goldfinches, Greenfinches, Linnets, Typical Warblers, Buntings and Shrikes.
