ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The municipality of Villangómez is part of the Mancomunidad of Ribera del Arlanza & del Monte in the province of Burgos, in an area which is mainly dedicated to cereal cultivation, the result of the rototilling of large areas of Pine, Holm Oak and Juniper which covered enormous expanses.

The route follows easy, wide, concentration paths amongst cultivated areas in the area around Villangómez, where one can see birds like the Great Bustard, Partridges, Common Quail, Crows and Shrikes. It is also easy to observe raptors typical of these open spaces, such as; the Lesser Kestrel, Red Kite, Montagu’s Harrier, Hen Harrier, and Long-eared Owl, the latter is nocturnal and nests in the small remaining areas of Holm Oak and Pine woodlands. The final part of the route passes through an area shaded by the riverside vegetation of the Cogollos stream on its return to Villangómez, where the melodious song of Nightingales, Tits, and other small songbirds can be heard in Spring.
